Reducing Holiday Stress with Yoga and Meditation

Has the end of the year got you feeling scattered or stressed? You’re not alone! While the end of the year is a great time for reflection and enjoying time with friends and family, the actual enjoyment often gets lost in the midst of to-dos, holiday parties, and travel plans. It’s important to give yourself the time to unwind and re-center so you are able to make the most of your holiday season.

Yoga is an ideal tool for stress-management—any time of year—because of its adaptable nature. We want some stress in our life because that tension allows us to strengthen and grow, while movement helps to discharge those pesky stress hormones that would remain in our body if we just sat still all day. In yoga we tense areas of the body, in particular shapes called asanas, to encourage a greater release as we exit the pose. However, it is also with the more calming and restorative aspect of yoga that we can learn what to do with ourselves when the distractions and stressors are gone. Whether a fiery power flow or a gentle meditation, yoga is a breath centric practice. It is from this balance of action and ease that the Slow Flow + Restore Holiday Yoga class was created.

In this upcoming class, we will journey through a progressive sequence of fluid movements and turn to restful, supported postures towards the end of class. You can expect a gentle heat building practice with heart and hip aware stretches, plus easy breathing techniques to take with you off your mat and into your day. The benefits aim to last beyond the 75-minute class and will equip you with self-care tools to find ease wherever this holiday season takes you.

CU Anschutz Health and Wellness Center yoga instructor Paige Nowak has created this class from her own experience of finding calm amidst the chaos. She wanted to create an opportunity for others to feel grounded in their bodies instead of lost in the busy holiday hustle.

“For me, December is all about giving gratitude for what I have experienced this year, but I have to consciously slow down to get to that place,” says Paige.
